Why your website isn’t showing on Google

A new website can take anywhere from 2 days to 6 weeks to appear on Google. This happens because Google’s crawlers haven’t discovered your site yet. The fastest way to fix this is to manually submit your website to Google Search Console.

Setting up Google Search Console

Go to Google Search Console
Click “Add Property” and enter your website URL
Verify ownership — the easiest method is to download an HTML verification file and upload it to your website root
Once verified, you have access to all indexing data

Submitting your sitemap

A sitemap tells Google exactly which pages exist on your website. In Search Console, go to Sitemaps in the left menu, enter your sitemap URL (for MakeFreeWebsite sites, this is yourdomain.com/sitemap-index.xml), and click Submit.

Requesting indexing for individual pages

For important pages, you can request immediate indexing. In Search Console, paste your page URL in the top search bar, click “Request Indexing”, and Google will typically crawl it within a few hours to days.

Common indexing errors and how to fix them

“Page with redirect” error: Your page redirects to another URL. Update your sitemap to use the final URL, not the redirecting one.

“Submitted URL blocked by robots.txt” error: Your robots.txt file is blocking Google from accessing that page. Check that your robots.txt doesn’t accidentally block important pages.

“Duplicate without canonical” error: Multiple URLs with the same content. Add a canonical tag pointing to the preferred version.

“Crawled but not indexed” error: Google visited your page but decided not to index it. This usually means thin content or duplicate content. Add more unique, valuable content to the page.

How long does indexing take?

After submitting to Search Console: individual pages requested via the URL inspection tool typically index within 1–7 days. New sitemaps are usually processed within 1–2 weeks. Homepage indexing is usually fastest.
